I will be playing Chronicles of Elyria for its HARDCORE content like permadeath and reborn spirits with pvp everywhere. This and Albion Online will be my main games for sure.
Perma death is indeed a nice feature, but balancing the feature out is really difficult.
Don’t think iv seen a game where that feature was implemented so that it didn’t involve insane game mechanic abusing or a lock down in the world so that only the strongest guilds can play anymore.
Some of the permadeath games also failed hard cause exping solo or with a weaker guild albion online gold took ages, but if you were in a top tier guild with all the elites you could boost eachother back to whatever max lvl – gear in 1-2 days. Which made the permadeath more of a nuisance than something that actually hurts.
In Wurm Online (when I used to play a few years ago) you could become a champion of one of the gods, which was a prestigious rank/title.You’d get some bonus stats and new skills as well as damage reduction so that made you quite tanky, but at cost of permadeath. Once a champion died there was a server-wide system message about the death of champion. It was a pretty cool system as you get some risk/reward becoming a champion. But I think pure permadeath system wouldn’t be good in any mmorpg.
